I am actually embarrassed that I didn’t think of this sooner! We have been playing the game”Around the World” (directions below) in my class for about ten years. I had folders full of giant flashcards I created for each unit. Each time we switched books, I would have to make a new set to align with a new vocabulary list.
However, I just realized that I could have been using Quizlet all this time!! Now I quickly make (or find) a set of cards with only pictures and terms. As a whole class, I project the flashcards, picture side up, and we go through the deck.
I can click shuffle on the side, and play again and again! What a HUGE time saver!
How to play
- Students face off two at a time.
- The first person to identify the image by calling out, moves on to compete against the next student. S/he keeps going until s/he loses, and then trades places with the new winner.
In my class, if you beat 6 people in a row, you get a prize. For beginning Spanish students, this is more attainable and therefore, more motivating. Most teachers, however, require a student beat the entire class, or get all the way “around the world” to earn a prize. I pass out a prize to a student every time s/he beats six people consecutively, and if s/he manages to make it all the way around the world, I offer a homework pass or extra credit.
My students love the competitive nature of this game!
I love all things Quizlet! You can read about other engaging Quizlet games in these posts:
