Reviewing chapter two
Today I started by passing back the reading questions for chapter two and asked students to look in their books to find the exact sentence to answer the question ¿Cuándo es el cumpleaños de Brandon? We talked about the importance of close reading and how most people got this one wrong. Then I wrote 5 statements on the board and asked students to translate them on the back of their paper. My goal was to hit home the point that there is no “apostrophe S” in Spanish. I normally hate doing translation, but this is such a hard concept for them. The 5 statements were:
- Brandon’s mom = La mamá de Brandon
- Brandon’s room = El dormitorio de Brandon
- Katie’s rat = La rata de Katie
- The dog’s collar = El collar del perro
- Jake’s house = La casa de Jake
Next time I would do this before passing out the Chapter two questions so I could assess it through the questions.
Reading chapter three
To introduce chapter three, we watched this video about animal noises in other languages, because the dog says “guau guau” throughout the book. The kids loved it! Finally I gave them 15 minutes to pre-teach themselves some of the words that they would need to know for chapter three by using this quizlet. Finally, I read the chapter aloud to them, pausing to ask comprehension questions. (This took about 40 minutes)
Since it was a block day and I had another 40 minutes, we played this Kahoot to review chapter three. I can’t take credit for creating it, although I did add pictures. Students always love these and it raises the energy instantly!
After that we copied down the question ¿Adónde va? into our “Preguntas importantes” list and I provided some pictures and input for them to practice this question. I also asked them personal questions like ¿Adónde vas antes de español? and then asked the next student ¿Adónde va Emma antes de español? before asking her the same question. Finally, I passed out the Chapter three reading questions and asked students to complete them independently and turn them into the basket. Tonight’s homework is to study some words that will appear in chapter four so they are ready to read tomorrow using this Quizlet. I plan to give them this simple matching quiz as a homework check at the beginning of class.
