Are you looking for some activities to incorporate during Hispanic Heritage Month? Here are some ideas to get you started!
1. Outdoor poster art
Perfect for social distancing! Have students research a country, famous person, or artist. Instead of sharing their knowledge online, ask them to illustrate a sidewalk square with chalk to educate the community! If your students are learning from home, ask them to upload a picture of their artwork.
2. Hispanic Heritage Month Biographies
I like to have students research famous Latinos and Hispanics and report out on their contributions to society. This webquest provides them with links to biographies and some guided questions. Students can choose a person that interests them based on categories of fame: athletes, scientists, activists, and celebrities. This could be a fun activity to combine with #1!
3. Virtual field trips:
Send students to South America on a virtual field trip! This webquest includes short video clips and questions for 9 different locations in South America. Students can choose where they’d like to visit based on the images that excite them.
4. Food exploration
My students always think tacos and burritos are eaten by all Spanish speakers. Wrong! I made this webquest to show them the diversity of hispanic and latino cuisine.
Want to kick it up a notch? Give students the option to prepare one of the dishes (or research a different one) to share with their family. Extra credit if they share a video or pictures of their cooking.
5. Famous artists self-portrait project
Expose your students to some of the most famous hispanic artists through their self-portraits. Then let students create their own self-portraits, mimicking the style of one of the masters! Hang their artwork around the room or add them to a slideshow you can share with the class!
