Speech Recognition SoundWriter is a VERY useful, free tool for struggling writers Within a Google Doc, a student launches this free extension that will turn their speech into text. AND, it works in multiple languages!!! I have only tried it with one student, but it was very helpful for him to spit out his initial ideas without worrying about the perfectionism of writing. I taught him to go back and read what he dictated and edit, explaining that writing should sound more formal than speech. He was so happy with how easily it worked and relieved that he was able to finish his work so quickly!
To set it up, within Google Docs, click on Add-ons > Get add-ons…
This will take you to the App store and you can search Speech Recognition SoundWriter and download for free.

Once it’s added, go back to your Add-ons menu to open it. You will get this box. Click on the big red circle and record!
To change the language, click on the language box and you can see below just how many choices you have. A perk for Spanish is that it recognizes different country’s accents and so you can select your country based on how you speak. So cool!
